JERICHO, Juab County — Two family members of former Salt Lake County Mayor Nancy Workman died after they crashed Saturday while driving to Juab County to spread Nancy’s ashes, authorities report.

Vern Workman, 80, and Betty Workman, 78, died after the crash Saturday, according to Juab County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Brent Pulver.

The two were driving to an area near Little Sahara Recreation Area to spread the ashes of Nancy, who died May 3.

Vern and Betty Workman, of Sandy, were driving to the area on the Weis Highway in Juab County about 10:50 a.m. Saturday, Pulver said. Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area and found that a 2000 Ford F-350 had gone off the road on a curve, overcorrected and rolled over.

Both occupants suffered critical injuries and were flown to hospitals in medical helicopters, Pulver said. Both later died from their injuries. It's not clear on what day they died.

The two were the only people in the truck, and there were no other vehicles involved, according to Pulver.

Pulver did not know how Vern and Betty Workman were related to Nancy.

A Republican, Nancy Workman served as mayor of Salt Lake County from 2000-04. She died May 3 at her home in St. George at age 79.
