PROVO — An Orem man was arrested on suspicion of automobile homicide and DUI after he rolled a car in Provo Canyon early Sunday morning, killing his passenger.
Victor Alencastro, 21, told police he had been drinking beer and driving too fast when he failed to negotiate a curve on Squaw Peak Road, according to Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon.
Cannon said the crash occurred about 4 a.m. Alencastro lost control of the car off the side of the road, where it rolled down a steep embankment about 200 feet down the mountain.
Alencastro was wearing a seat belt and survived with minor injuries, Cannon said.
The 21-year-old passenger, identified on Monday as Miguel Angel Gonzalez-Bautista, of Orem, was not wearing a seat belt; he was ejected through the car's sunroof and died at the scene, Cannon said.
Alencastro was treated at Utah Valley Hospital and is now being held in Utah County Jail. His bail has been set at $6,420.
