LAYTON — A Layton man was arrested Sunday after police say he attempted to stab another man, then resisted officers who were trying to take him into custody.
Derek Robert Holmes, 32, of Layton, was arrested for investigation of attempted murder, assault, DUI, threatening to use a weapon in a fight, unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon, being an alcohol-restricted driver and custodial interference.
Just after 7 p.m., Layton police were called to the area of 1600 N. Angel Street where Holmes “had just been in a physical altercation with several other individuals. It had been reported Derek had used a knife in the fight and had injured one of the other parties,” according to a police affidavit.
Police say Holmes assaulted at least two people. During one altercation, the victim fell to the ground and “Derek got over the top of (the man). Derek produced a knife and attempted to stab (him). (The man) informed officers (that) Derek stated he was going to kill him as he was attempting to stab him,” the affidavit states.
The man was injured when he grabbed the blade of the knife as Holmes attempted to stab him, police say.
Officers located Holmes driving a car, swerving from side to side, and when he got out of the car, “Derek was confrontational and noncompliant with officers,” the affidavit states. “He was verbally aggressive with officers as he begged them to shoot him. As a result of his actions, Derek was tazed and placed into handcuffs.”
Witnesses recorded Holmes’ two confrontations on their cellphones, according to the affidavit.
