University of Utah announces confirmed coronavirus case in Union building

The University of Utah says there has been a confirmed case of a building occupant with COVID-19. "Out of an abundance of caution, the Union building is currently closed until further notice," according to a university statement updated on Sunday. The Feed U Pantry will continue to provide curbside pickup at the east entrance Mondays and Thursdays from 12-3 p.m. starting on Thursday. Americans brace for 'hardest, saddest' week of their lives

Americans braced for what the nation's top doctor warned Sunday would be “the hardest and saddest week” of their lives while Britain assumed the unwelcome mantle of deadliest coronavirus hot spot in Europe after a record 24-hour jump in deaths that surpassed even hard-hit Italy's. Britain's own prime minister, Boris Johnson, was hospitalized, 10 days after testing positive for COVID-19 in what his office described as a “precautionary step.” Amid the dire news, there were also glimmers of hope some hard-hit areas — the number of people dying appeared to be slowing in New York City, Spain and Italy. The news was cautiously welcomed by leaders, who also noted that any gains could easily be reversed if people did not continue to adhere to strict lockdowns. — Associated Press Read the full story here.

Kane County reports second confirmed coronavirus case

Kane County announced its second resident case of COVID-19 Sunday night. The patient is exhibiting mild symptoms and is being quarantined at home, according to a news release. The county is asking anyone who has traveled internationally or within the U.S. to practice social distancing for two weeks. Anyone who experiences symptoms is asked to contact a healthcare provider before getting tested. — Jen Riess, KSL.com

Tiger contracts coronavirus in New York

The United States Department of Agriculture has confirmed a New York zoo tiger has SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 in humans. The tiger was tested after several large cats at the zoo showed symptoms, according to the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. The animals were exposed to an employee who was "actively shedding virus." All of the large cats are expected to recover, according to a department statement, adding "there is no evidence that other animals in other areas of the zoo are showing symptoms." "This is the first case of its kind. We are still learning about this new coronavirus and how it spreads," the statement continued. "This case suggests that a zoo employee spread the virus to the tiger. Further studies are needed to understand if and how different animals could be affected by COVID-19. State animal and public health officials will continue to work closely with USDA and CDC to monitor this situation and will conduct additional testing if it is warranted." The statement also says that at this time there is no evidence that any animals can spread the virus to humans. — Jen Riess, KSL.com

Sunday case number update: 1,605 positive tests in Utah

Sunday's daily update from the Utah Department of Health revealed 1,605 people have now tested positive for COVID-19, up from 1,428 Utahns the day before. The number includes all Utahns who have contracted the disease since the pandemic began, including those who have recovered. Health department numbers show 124 Utahns have been hospitalized with COVID-19; eight have died from it, but no new deaths were announced Sunday. At least 30,892 Utahns have now been tested for COVID-19. Read the full story here.

Hill AFB to send medical personnel to NYC

"Several" medical personnel from the Reserve 419th Fighter Wing will deploy to New York City today to assist in fighting the novel coronavirus, a Hill Air Force Base spokesperson announced Sunday. The RNs and nurse practitioners are members of the Air Force Reserve who work full-time in the community; they were called up under an executive order from President Donald Trump. — Graham Dudley, KSL.com

Lake Powell to close Monday

Another popular recreation destination in Utah is falling victim to the coronavirus pandemic, with Lake Powell closing its boat ramps effective 5 p.m. Monday and owners of moored vessels instructed to keep them docked. The announcement by the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is delivering another blow to Utah’s tourism industry as public land managers enact restrictions to abide by Gov. Gary Herbert’s directive to stay safe by staying home and emphasizing social distancing. Boaters have to be off the water no later than by the Monday afternoon deadline, although beaches remain open for swimming and other water-based recreation. Read the full story here.
