DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Freshman Cassius Stanley scored 14 of his 18 points after halftime as No. 12 Duke took over in the second half to beat North Carolina State 88-69 on Monday night. Fellow rookie Vernon Carey Jr. added 17 points for Duke, which shot 63% after halftime. Duke had a run of 17 straight scoring possessions after halftime and dominated the glass by a 46-27 margin. The Blue Devils also used zone defense to take N.C. State out of its early rhythm. Devon Daniels had 14 points and nine rebounds for the Wolfpack, who won the first meeting by 22 points.
ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia Tech will not play in this month's ACC men's basketball tournament. The school has withdrawn its appeal of the NCAA postseason ban, one of the penalties handed out last year over major recruiting violations. The ACC Tournament is set for March 10-14 in Greensboro, North Carolina. By accepting the postseason ban, Georgia Tech is assured of being eligible to compete in the postseason in the 2020-21 season and beyond. The Yellow Jackets are 15-14 and likely would have had to win the ACC Tournament to earn a bid to this year's NCAA Tournament. The school is continuing its appeal of the limits on official visits and the reduction of one scholarship each of the next four years.
UNDATED (AP) — College basketball has reached the final week of the regular season in all the major conferences. A lot is still left to be decided. While No. 6 Kentucky has wrapped up the SEC title and No. 8 Seton Hall has earned a share of the Big East, the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten and Pac-12 all will come down to the wire. The Big Ten has a logjam at the top, with six teams within two games of each other.
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Nearing the end of his 34th season as a college basketball coach, the Miami Hurricanes' Jim Larranaga has no plans to quit. The 70-year-old Larranaga says he loves coaching, can't see himself doing anything else and has “no interest in ever retiring.” Larranaga is under contract through 2023-24. He has coached four NCAA Tournament teams in his nine seasons at Miami, but the Hurricanes went 14-18 a year ago. That was Larranaga's first losing record since 1997-98 at Bowling Green. This season Miami is 14-14 overall and 6-12 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with two regular-season games remaining.
HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (AP) — A judge has declared a mistrial in the case of a former college football player charged with violating North Carolina’s sports agent law nearly a decade ago. Christopher Hawkins faced four counts tied to providing cash to three former Tar Heels football players in 2010. But after more than seven hours of deliberations, the jury informed Superior Court Judge John O. Craig III that it couldn't reach an unanimous verdict on any charge. The mistrial comes nearly a decade after the North Carolina Secretary of State’s office began its investigation in summer 2010.
UNDATED (AP) — Kansas is the unanimous No. 1 in a week of upheaval in the AP Top 25. The Jayhawks received all 64 first-place votes from the media panel in The Associated Press men's college basketball poll. Gonzaga was No. 2, with Dayton, Baylor and San Diego State rounding out the top five. The Aztecs, No. 9 Maryland and No. 18 Iowa were the only teams to hold their place after a week in which nine Top 25 teams lost to unranked opponents. Dayton has its highest ranking since reaching No. 2 in 1955-56 after stretching its winning streak to 18 games. Virginia, Illinois and Wisconsin moved into the poll. West Virginia, Colorado and Texas Tech fell out.
NEW YORK (AP) — South Carolina, Baylor, Oregon and Maryland would be the No. 1 seeds if the women's NCAA Tournament began Monday. With two weeks to go until selection Monday, the NCAA revealed the top 16 teams to this point of the season. Most of the major conferences are set to begin their conference tournaments this week. The top 16 teams in the field would potentially host the opening two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, which begins March 20.
NEW YORK (AP) — South Carolina, Baylor and Oregon continue to lead the way in The Associated Press women's college basketball poll as the top three teams. Stanford fell three spots to No. 7 after dropping games to Oregon and Arizona. It was another rough week for ranked teams, with six of them losing Sunday to unranked opponents. That includes TCU, which fell out of the poll. Arkansas re-entered the rankings at No. 25.
