HANKSVILLE, Wayne County — A 33-year-old woman died on Tuesday morning after she fell while rappelling, Wayne County Sheriff’s officials said.

Fiona Heckscher of Washington, D.C., was rappelling out of a slot canyon near Angel Point Cove trailhead when she slid about 20 feet, and then went into a free fall of another 40 feet to the bottom of the canyon, authorities said.

Sheriff’s deputies responded, as well as Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue crews. Heckscher's friends attempted life-saving measures on her before authorities arrived.

When deputies and crews arrived, they were told Heckscher had died of her injuries.
