SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake man was charged Wednesday with shooting at a boy walking home from school and then stealing his backpack.

Eleveni King Mikavaipapalang Latu, 19, is charged in 3rd District Court with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, and discharge of a firearm, a third-degree felony.

On Jan. 28, a 17-year-old boy was walking home from school near Edison Street and Cleveland Avenue when Latu drove up next to him, got out of his vehicle and fired a shot at the boy, according to charging documents.

“(The boy) states that he dropped to the ground and (Latu) said something like, ‘Give me your stuff,’” the charges state.

Latu took the backpack, which contained some cash, the boy’s debit card and his school ID, according to court records.

Latu’s vehicle was recorded on a security camera from a nearby business and police spotted it two days later, the charges state. Investigators followed the vehicle to Latu’s home, where he was interviewed and evidence was collected.

Bail was set Wednesday at $75,000.
