PROVO — A rising BYU football standout has been charged with five counts of low- to mid-level misdemeanors related to a DUI citation from Sunday morning.

Chaz Kapuni Kalauli Ah You, 21, a sophomore linebacker who prepped at Westlake and Timpview high schools, was cited with drinking in or about a vehicle, a Class C misdemeanor, and DUI, alcohol/drugs or combo, a Class B misdemeanor, according to court documents filed Tuesday in the Utah County Justice Court.

The charges stem from an incident Sunday, Feb. 9 at 4:46 p.m. on Red Hawk Ranch Road in Eagle Mountain, when Ah You was also charged with reckless driving, a Class B misdemeanor, and two infractions of an improper lane change and speeding for going 75 in a 40 mph zone, according to charging documents.

A hearing has been scheduled for April 7 in Utah County Justice Court.

Ah You was placed under arrest at the scene and his vehicle impounded, according to a probable cause statement from police. While the responding officer searched the vehicle, he observed two containers of alcohol, including one that was empty. A THC vape pen was also found in the center console of Ah You's vehicle.

After administering a field sobriety test, Ah You was found to have a “presumptive measurable amount” of alcohol in his system, according to the police statement.

The 6-foot-2, 206-pound linebacker had 31 tackles, a sack, an interception and a forced fumble with three pass breakups while playing primarily flash linebacker in his first season at BYU following a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

A four-star recruit who played safety, quarterback, receiver, returner and punter in high school, Ah You signed with BYU after considerable interest, including Stanford, UCLA, Washington, Notre Dame, Utah and others.
