SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah man has been charged with raping a 7-year-old girl.

Joshua Oliver Perez, 23, whose address is listed as unknown in court documents, was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with rape of a child, a first-degree felony.

The incident happened on Jan. 30, police say. After the assault, the girl was “hysterical and crying” when she told her parents what had happened, according to charging documents.

Perez was convicted of burglary in 2016, in exchange for charges of assault and kidnapping being dropped. He was sentenced to some jail time and placed on probation, which he was still on at the time of the rape, according to court records.

Perez left Odyssey House against the advice of the drug treatment clinic on Jan. 22, according to court documents filed in relation to his probation violation. At that time, Adult Probation and Parole agents stated Perez’s whereabouts were unknown.
