WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump stood before a Congress and nation sharply divided by impeachment and used his State of the Union address on Tuesday to extol a “Great American Comeback” on his watch. That's just three years after he took office decrying a land of “American carnage” under his predecessor. The partisan discord in Washington was on vivid display as the first president to campaign for reelection while facing impeachment vigorously made his case for another term: Republican legislators chanted “Four More Years.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ripped up her copy of Trump's speech as he ended his address.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has used Democrats' response to President Donald Trump's State of the Union address to swivel from impeachment to working-class voters' worries. Whitmer mentioned Trump's impeachment trial only briefly near the end of her nearly 11-minute speech Tuesday night. She spent the bulk of her address touting Democratic efforts on health care and people's struggles to pay their bills. But Whitmer's remarks were overshadowed by an extraordinary gesture moments earlier by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi marked the end of the president's address by theatrically tearing her copy of his remarks in half.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has used Democrats' response to President Donald Trump's State of the Union address to swivel from impeachment to working-class voters' worries. Whitmer says Democrats are focusing on making health care more affordable and addressing other concerns. Democrats' decision to pick Whitmer show that they are focusing on the Midwest, where Trump won surprising victories in 2016 that helped carry him to the White House. It also represents an attempt to appeal to women, who have been alienated by Trump's conservatives stances and whom Democrats are trying to win over.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez wants "absolute transparent accounting" of the technological meltdown that led to delayed results from Monday's leadoff Iowa caucuses. Perez said in a statement Tuesday that "what happened last night should never happen again." Saying it was “clear” the app used to tally caucus results failed, Perez called on the vendor to “provide absolute transparent accounting" of what happened. The Iowa Democratic Party released partial results after technological failures caused a daylong delay. The numbers show Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders leading the contest. Elizabeth Warren, Joe Biden and Amy Klobuchar are trailing.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Democrat Kweisi Mfume and Republican Kimberly Klacik have won special primaries for the Maryland congressional seat that was held by the late Elijah Cummings. The winners prevailed over a crowded field Tuesday. Twenty-four Democrats and eight Republicans were on the ballot for the Baltimore area 7th Congressional District primary. Democrats outnumber Republicans by more than 4 to 1 in the district. Whoever wins in a special general election on April 28 will serve out the rest of Cummings' term and would have to stand for election again in November to win a full two-year term.
