TESTIMONY CONTINUES IN HARVEY WEINSTEIN CASE

NEW YORK (AP) — An actress who appeared in “The Sopranos” will be one of the stars of today’s testimony in the Harvey Weinstein rape trial. Annabella Sciorra (SKOOR’-uh) isn’t one of the women whose encounters with the movie mogul resulted in the criminal charges Weinstein now faces. But prosecutors will call her to show jurors that Weinstein had a pattern of assaulting women. Sciorra will tell the jury Weinstein gave her a ride home to her apartment in Manhattan — and forced his way inside. In opening statements yesterday, prosecutors said despite telling Weinstein to leave and telling him no, Weinstein “was undeterred” and the assault left Sciorra “passed out on the floor.”

HARVEY WEINSTEIN PAINTED WITH SINISTER BRUSH

NEW YORK (AP) — Part movie mogul, part monster. That’s how the prosecution described Harvey Weinstein as his rape trial got under way yesterday. Prosecutor Meghan Hast told the jury that Weinstein wasn’t just a titan in Hollywood, but he was also a rapist. Weinstein’s attorneys told jurors in their opening that Weinstein did no wrong — and that his sexual relations with women were consensual. To support that view, they say they will show jurors emails and other communication that indicated the women were willing partners, not victims.

WEINSTEIN ATTORNEYS SEEK MISTRIAL, REJECTED

NEW YORK (AP) — Harvey Weinstein’s legal team wasted little time trying to get the trial kicked out of court before it began in earnest. The defense asked the judge to declare a mistrial during opening statements. It happened when prosecutors were arguing that Weinstein was a well-connected man, not just in Hollywood, but also in business and politics. When they displayed an image of Weinstein with former President Bill Clinton, the defense cried foul. They argued for the trial to be shut down, saying the image was irrelevant and aimed at inflaming the jury. The trial judge, James Burke, denied the request.

FORMER WEINSTEIN BOARD MEMBER TESTIFIES

NEW YORK (AP) — A former board member of the Weinstein Company was the first person to take the stand in the rape trial of the man whose name is linked to the firm. Lance Maerov told jurors that the ex-producer had a Jekyll and Hyde personality. Maerov said Weinstein was “an extremely influential, powerful person” who could be charming in public. On the other hand, Maerov said Weinstein’s “public personality was diametrically opposed to who he was in private.” The Weinstein Company went bankrupt after Weinstein’s alleged behavior with women was brought to light.

CUBA GOODING JR. TRIAL DATE SET

NEW YORK (AP) — It was a case of #MeToo worlds colliding. In the very same New York City courthouse where Harvey Weinstein’s rape trial was beginning — a trial date was being set for Cuba Gooding Jr. The Oscar-winning actor is facing charges of groping three women without their consent. And at a hearing yesterday, a judge set a trial date for April 21. Gooding has denied wrongdoing — and his lawyer has claimed it’s a case of #MeToo concerns run amok. Prosecutors say Gooding has a habit of being handsy with women in public.

IMPEACHMENT - TV

NEW YORK (AP) — The major TV broadcast networks decided the first night of arguments in favor of President Donald Trump's impeachment weren’t ready for prime time. Instead of showing the historic session, ABC, CBS and NBC all stuck with their regularly scheduled shows. Those who wanted to keep up with the impeachment had to head for cable, where CNN and MSNBC carried the full session. Not all cable, though. Fox News Channel, which backs Trump, had Congressman Adam Schiff’s arguments on about a half hour. Fox then cut away for a child support case involving former Vice President Joe Biden's son Hunter — and never returned to the impeachment.

FOUNDING MEMBER OF MONTY PYTHON COMEDY TROUPE DIES

LONDON (AP) — If you’re familiar with Monty Python, you know Terry Jones was a comedy genius. But those who knew him personally remember him as a man who stayed enthusiastic all his life, even as he battled dementia. A statement from his family says Jones faced the illness that killed him with good humor and bravery. Fellow Monty Python founding member Michael Palin (PAY’-lin) says Jones “was one of my closest, most valued friends.” Terry Jones was 77.
