SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah GOP leader has resigned so he can run for a seat in the Utah House of Representatives.

Aaron Starks, the Utah Republican Party vice chairman, announced in his notice of resignation Tuesday his candidacy for Utah’s District 42, a House seat currently held by Rep. Kim Coleman, who is this year running for the 4th Congressional District seat now held by Utah’s only Democrat in Congress, Rep. Ben McAdams.

“It is with great excitement that I join in this process and officially announce my candidacy for the State House of Representatives in Utah’s 42 district and conclude my service as vice chairman,” Starks wrote in his notice of resignation to the Utah State Central Committee on Tuesday.

“I look forward to connecting with delegates and earning their votes over the ensuing months,” Starks wrote. “I hope to fight for our conservative principles and do my part to ensure Utah remains economically viable, globally competitive, and great for years to come!”

Starks in his notice of resignation said he was “honored” to have served in party leadership, saying he considers himself “blessed and lucky” to have served.

He also highlighted several ways the party “drastically changed directions and improved” over the past year, including financial solvency and ability to contribute to candidates who earn the party’s endorsement, a revamp of the party’s branding, and more.

“I am honored to have served with an outstanding team who has unified to give the party direction and leadership,” Starks said.
