WEST VALLEY CITY — A Chevy dealership lost six vehicles in an early morning fire which is under investigation, authorities say.
The fire occurred at approximately 4 a.m. Sunday morning at a Chevrolet dealership near 4000 West and 3500 South, West Valley City Fire Battalion Chief Bridger Williams confirmed.
There were several explosions with flames reaching up to 20 feet in the air caused by gas that was still in the vehicles when the flames ignited. The six burned vehicles "were skeletons" and likely a complete loss afterward, Williams said. The vehicles may have all been customer-owned since the cars burned next to an area where customer's cars normally receive services, such as body or warranty work, he added.
An ambulance and a fire engine initially responded, but eventually multiple engines and trucks were called for backup. No damage occurred to the dealership itself, and monetary damage to the vehicles is currently unknown.
Williams said that, although water lines froze when water wasn't running through them, firefighters encountered no issues while extinguishing the blaze, and no one suffered injuries.
He also stated that the fire appeared to be suspicious, due to the freezing overnight temperatures and the cars being sedentary for hours before the flames broke out.
There are no current suspects, and the investigation is ongoing.
Williams added that anyone with information regarding the incident should call Valley Emergency Communications Center at (801) 840-4000.
