Our High 5 series is an opportunity to publicly recognize members of the community who are making a difference.
Jane Baxley teaches kindergarten at Sego Lily Elementary in Lehi. She has been teaching for more than 30 years at schools all over the world.
Parents say the lessons and confidence their kids take away from her classroom are a life-changing gift. The entire school came together to help us award Mrs. Baxley with a KSL High 5.
The excitement was contagious. The students were more than willing to help invite in Mrs. Baxley, who was in the hallway. The look on her face displayed pure shock, while the emotion in her eyes conveyed sincere gratitude.
"A lot of kids in this room think you are pretty special," we told her.
Lisa Bell's son is one of Mrs. Baxley's students. Lisa nominated the teacher for a High 5.
"I don't think my words could explain enough, but obviously from the response in the room she loves her students, and that's the biggest reason I wanted to nominate her," Lisa said.
"She personifies an excellent teacher. She helps these kids feel good about themselves and to succeed in her classroom when they leave her classroom, and they do it," Lisa added.
We asked Mrs. Baxley why she teaches.
"I do what I do because I love what I do. It's my passion. I am the luckiest person in the room. I get paid for doing what I absolutely love to do," she answered.
"I hope that when they leave my classroom they will remember that they were loved and that they can do whatever they want to do and be," she said.
