SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police in Salt Lake City say a driver has been arrested on suspicion of automobile homicide and DUI after a car accident killed a 5-year-old boy. They say the child and his mother were in a crosswalk Saturday when they both were struck by an SUV. The woman suffered injuries not considered life threatening. The names of the mother and child haven’t been released yet. The Salt Lake Tribune reports 56-year-old Carl Wayne Johnson told police he drank two beers before the accident.
EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah (AP) — A Utah high school student who lost both her parents to heart attacks has been nominated for a prestigious scholarship on the strength of her idea for a CPR-assistance device. The Daily Herald in Provo reports that Kennedy Hall’s idea would create a device that fits over a person’s nose and mouse and do artificial breaths for a person. Hall says many people have a basic idea of how to give CPR, but don’t know exactly how to do it.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Fans of the movie “High School Musical” have been coming to see the Utah school where the movie was filmed more than a decade ago. The trend could grow with the premiere of Disney’s new streaming service series based on the story. The Deseret News reports that much the popular 2006 movie and new show were filmed at East High School in Salt Lake City. To draw in fans, the state office of tourism has compiled a four-day, four-night “High School Musical Itinerary” for visitors to follow.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah State Prison inmate has been charged with first-degree murder in the killing of his cellmate. The Deseret News reports 24-year-old James Tamoua of Salt Lake City was charged Friday in state District Court in the Sept. 21 killing of 38-year-old Reo Guy Watts of Salem at the prison in Draper.
