WEST VALLEY CITY — Police on Tuesday identified a woman who died and a man who was arrested after a fatal crash on Sunday.

Yesenia Castro, 30, was hit and killed by a car about 12:40 a.m. Sunday near 3590 S. 3200 West, police said. She was transported to a hospital, where she later died.

Mario Sosa, 37, was arrested in connection with the crash, according to West Valley City police. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Monday for investigation of failing to remain at a fatal accident and not having a valid driver’s license, according to a jail report.

Multiple witnesses told police that Sosa was involved with the crash, the jail report states. He allegedly ran away from the scene of the crash after it occurred, according to the report.

Several witnesses told police that Sosa told them he had been involved in a crash but had left the scene, the report states. Witnesses also reported that some of Sosa’s belongings were left inside the car that was involved in the crash, according to the report.

Sosa’s girlfriend told police that Sosa said he fell asleep at the wheel and drifted into oncoming traffic, which caused the crash, according to the report.
