SALT LAKE CITY — The occupants of a house that caught fire Monday afternoon were able to get out in time, but their cat died in the blaze, firefighters said.
The Salt Lake City Fire Department responded to reports of smoke around 2:30 p.m. at 923 N. 1500 West to find the residence in flames, Capt. Tony Stowe said.
The people living in the house had been able to evacuate and avoid injury, but their cat was unable to get out and died from smoke inhalation, according to Stowe.
The fire burned “quite quickly” through the house’s open floor plan, Stowe said. Adding to the firefighters’ challenges was the close proximity of the house to neighboring homes.
“With them being built so close together there’s always a concern that they’ll jump from one structure to another,” Stowe said.
The fire stayed confined to the one house, however, and was quickly brought under control, Stowe said. He did not have an estimate Monday for the amount of damage done to the house.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
