MURRAY — Northbound I-15 was closed for multiple hours Saturday night at 4500 South in Murray after concrete debris in the roadway caused multiple accidents.

The debris initially caused a minor accident involving one semitruck, causing some delays. Ultimately, four more vehicles were involved in minor accidents at the scene, Utah Highway Patrol spokesman Andy Battenfield said.

The wrecks delayed UHP efforts to reopen the highway.

"What happened was a chain reaction," Battenfield said. He said cars were traveling "too fast and too close" when they passed the initial accident on the roadside, causing the additional crashes.

Two people were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, he said. Battenfield said "six or seven" state trooper cars were on the scene to clear the crashes and debris.

The Utah Department of Transportation website estimated that some delays would continue until about 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
