SALT LAKE CITY — Businessman Greg Miller announced Wednesday he will not run for governor in 2020.
“At this time, I believe I can do more to enrich the lives of my fellow Utahns through my work in the private sector and through philanthropic and community engagement,” Miller, son of the late Larry H. Miller and a member of the board of directors for the family’s group of companies that includes the Utah Jazz, said in a statement.
Miller said he had “contemplated the possibility” of running with the “encouragement and commitments from business and community leaders, and family and friends.” He said he reached his decision after careful consideration.
There are already two declared GOP candidates, Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox and businessman Jeff Burningham, in the race to succeed Gov. Gary Herbert, a Republican who has held the office since 2009, when then-Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. resigned at the start of his second term to become U.S. ambassador to China.
Huntsman, a source told KSL in April, has not ruled out what would be his third run for governor. He is set to step down Thursday as U.S. ambassador to Russia under President Donald Trump after serving about two years in Moscow.
Other potential GOP candidates include former Utah House Speaker Greg Hughes, who reported this week raising nearly $500,000 that could be used for a run for governor; Salt Lake County Councilwoman Aimee Winder Newton; former Utah GOP Chairman Thomas Wright; and businessman Spencer Eccles.
No Democratic candidates for governor have surfaced yet. Republicans have held the top state office since the mid-1980s.
