SALT LAKE CITY — Just a few weeks before his 95th birthday, Latter-day Saint President Russell M. Nelson will embark on a ministry tour to Latin America — his fourth tour in nearly one and a half years.
The leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will visit six locations in five Latin American countries, from Argentina to Guatemala. He will be accompanied by his wife, Wendy Nelson, as well as apostle Elder Quentin L. Cook and his wife, Mary Cook.
President Nelson leaves Saturday and will return nine days later, according to a news release from the church. He’ll visit:
Guatemala City, Guatemala
President Nelson is scheduled to meet with Latter-day Saint leaders then speak at a meeting that will be broadcast throughout the country Saturday. There are nearly 278,000 members of the church in Guatemala.
Bogota, Colombia
President Nelson, Sister Nelson, Elder Cook and Sister Cook are scheduled to speak at a devotional that will be broadcast to the 205,000 Latter-day Saints in Colombia Sunday.
Quito, Ecuador
On Monday evening, President Nelson will speak at a devotional in Ecuador’s capital. The South American country is home to 249,000 Latter-day Saints.
Buenos Aires, Argentina
President Nelson will speak to more than 460,000 members of the church in Argentina Wednesday in an evening devotional which will be broadcast throughout the country.
Brasilia, Brazil
President Nelson will make his first of two stops in Brazil on Friday, where he will meet with missionaries serving in the country’s capital. The meeting will be broadcast to the 5,300 missionaries in Brazil’s 35 missions.
Sao Paulo, Brazil
The Nelsons and Cooks will finish the ministry tour on Sept. 1 with an afternoon devotional in Sao Paulo — one of the world’s most populous cities. The meeting will be broadcast to the nearly 1.4 million members of the church living in Brazil.
There are more than 2.6 million total Latter-day Saints in the countries President Nelson will visit.
President Nelson completed his first global ministry tour in April 2018 just four months after becoming the president of the church, following the death of former President Thomas S. Monson. During that tour, he traveled around the world to London, Israel, Kenya, Zimbabwe, India, Thailand, Hong Kong and Hawaii.
At the end of October 2018, he set off on another ministry tour to South America and visited Latter-day Saints in Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and Chile. Just a few months after that, he embarked on a tour of the South Pacific in Samoa, New Zealand, Australia, Tonga, Fiji and Tahiti.
It has been about three months since he returned from his most recent tour.
