SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Former Utah first lady Norma Matheson has died at age 89. Lt. Governor Chief of Staff Kirsten Rappleye said Monday that family members confirmed Matheson died Sunday night. Norma Matheson served as first lady alongside Democratic Gov. Scott Matheson from 1977 through 1985. More recently, she helped launch the Count My Vote that changed Utah's primary process. Her children said in a statement that she "brought empathy, grace and common sense to everything she did."
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The rejection of Utah's closely watched plan to partially expand Medicaid could send other states back to the drawing board on covering more low-income people under President Barack Obama's signature health-care law. Matt Salo with the National Association of Medicaid Directors said Monday the decision will be disappointing in conservative-leaning states where officials had considered Utah's plan a middle-ground approach. Supporters of full Medicaid expansion cheered the federal decision.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah's decision to award a smaller number of medical marijuana grower licenses than allowed by law is being challenged by six companies claiming the state granted licenses to unqualified cultivators and had inappropriate interactions with applicants. State officials say they received appeals from six rejected applicants. The appeals could delay the rollout of medical marijuana in Utah because state law says the licenses cannot be finalized until protests are resolved.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Republican U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop said Monday he is sticking with his plan to retire when his term ends next year after flirting with the idea of running for re-election. The heavily Republican Utah congressional district makes it unlikely a Democrat could win the seat in 2020. The longtime congressman told the Deseret News on Monday it was a difficult decision, but he didn't want to renege on his promise that this would be his final term.
