SPRINGVILLE — A sketch drawn by a 9-year-old girl in Springville recently gave police a break in a package theft case.
On Saturday, Symoni Berg watched while a truck pulled a U-turn in front of her house, then a person in the passenger seat took the family’s mail and left.
When her mom found out what happened, she gave Symoni a set of markers and asked her to draw the truck, knowing that an Amazon package had been delivered with a few books for her older daughter’s English class.
“My mom asked me to draw a picture so she could see what the truck looked like,” Symoni said. “I don’t like to draw every day. I do it when I am bored.”
While law enforcement often rely on the skill of a police sketch artist, Symoni’s drawing helped an investigator identify the truck while reviewing camera footage of the neighborhood.
“It’s the first case I can ever remember of a 9-year-old girl being a sketch artist for the police,” Springville Police Chief Craig Martinez said.
Symoni’s drawing included everything from the truck’s bright red color to the rack attached to the truck bed.
“(She is a) very, very intuitive 9-year-old girl, so we appreciate her help. We look forward to arresting these folks and using that sketch in court,” Martinez said.
Police believe they are looking for a Mazda and are confident someone will recognize the vehicle.
Anyone with information about the truck can call the Springville Police Department at 801-489-9421.
