SYRACUSE — Fire crews fought a new fire near Leamington Pass on Thursday night — a blaze which is now reaching an estimated 700 acres, officials say.
The new fire started Thursday near the north end of the Canyon Range, according to Utah Fire Info. Located about one mile north of Leamington Pass, the fire has consumed an estimated 700 acres.
There are multiple agencies on scene, including air resources and federal and state fire engines, according to Utah Fire Info. Officials do not have an estimate as to when the fire will be under control at this time. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
Crews also extinguished two small brush fires Thursday, one in Antelope Island and the other in Pleasant Grove, officials said.
The Antelope Island fire broke out late Thursday morning, officials said.
Utah State Parks and Recreation Lt. Eric Stucki said the blaze burned about 5 acres, but crews were able to quickly contain it just before noon. He said it was located in the northwest portion of the park near White Rock Bay.
The Utah Department of Natural Resources tweeted the fire was out by 2 p.m.
Officials at the state park tweeted all trails out of White Rock Bay and access from Gravel Pit are closed while crews worked to put out the fire. It wasn't clear Thursday afternoon whether those trails had reopened.
Utah State Parks and Syracuse fire crews were dispatched to the fire, Stucki added. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
"We'll definitely have the fire investigators look at it and see what the cause was," he said.
Flames were reported in Pleasant Grove a little after 2 p.m. between 1500 North and 1900 North prompting numerous agencies to respond, according to the city’s social media. Officials said the fire was wind-driven and in the hills by the Valley Vista Trails.
By 3 p.m., the approximately 6-acre fire was completely contained, city officials said via social media. At that point, crews were working on extinguishing hot spots.
Homes were not evacuated or threatened during the fire, officials said. The cause of the blaze was also under investigation Thursday afternoon, officials said.
