SALT LAKE CITY — An 80-year-old Orem man has been found safe hours after a Silver Alert was issued by police.
Robert Jones "was located when he used his card again at a gas station in Wilder, Idaho," according to a Monday night post on the Orem Police Department's Facebook page.
The alert asking for the public's help in locating Jones was issued Monday afternoon. It said Jones was last seen at his Orem home Saturday and there had been transactions made on his credit card in Oregon, Idaho and Nevada.
His family told Orem police Jones has Alzheimer’s disease and they didn’t know why he would be traveling across these states.
Orem police said Jones was found "in good health and had one epic road trip." He was with police in Idaho Monday night awaiting the arrival of his family members, according to the Facebook post.
The Silver Alert system is new to Utah. It is designed to help officials locate elderly missing persons, typically with dementia. It was passed as HB215 during this year’s legislative session.

Editor's note: A previous version said transactions had been made using Jones's credit card in California. That information was incorrect and has been removed.
