TAYLORSVILLE — A man who was kayaking Thursday evening on the Jordan River drowned after his kayak hit a spillway and flipped, authorities said.
The incident occurred just before 6 p.m. and the man’s kayaking companion was able to get the man out of the water and perform CPR, but it was too late Unified police detective Kent Hansen said.
When first responders arrived, they also performed CPR on the man and transported him to a hospital, Hansen said.
When the kayak flipped, it submerged the man underwater and he drowned as a result, according to Hansen.
Authorities said the man was in his 50s and the spillway was located at 4600 South. The force of the water kept the man under, officials said.
It’s common for the Jordan River to pull people under, Hansen warned. He said the water can be misleading because although it’s not typically a fast-moving river, it is deep, full and can be difficult to get out of.
Hansen said the man and his friend were trying to kayak to the North Temple area.
