LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Alex Binelas' walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Trey Leonard and top-seeded Louisville edged Illinois State 4-3 in an NCAA regional final, sending the Cardinals to their sixth Super Regional in the past seven seasons. After committing a center field error in the top of the ninth for an unearned run that helped the No. 3 Redbirds to tie the game, Leonard reached on a sacrifice bunt and eventually scored on Binelas' bases-loaded single up the middle.
UNDATED (AP) — Josh Heupel, who was the Heisman Trophy runner-up for Oklahoma in 2000, and former North Carolina pass-rushing star Julius Peppers are among 12 players making their first appearance of the College Football Hall of Fame ballot. Other first-time candidates include C.J. Spiller of Clemson, Chris Samuels of Alabama and James Laurinaitis of Ohio State. The 2020 class will be announced in January.
UNDATED (AP) — Michigan's hiring of Juwan Howard continues a recent trend of college programs hiring former NBA players. Howard had no previous college coaching experience before being named John Beilein's replacement. Vanderbilt hired Jerry Stackhouse in April. Memphis made a surprise move by hiring Penny Hardaway two years ago. Patrick Ewing is entering his third season at his alma mater, Georgetown.
