SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Four-star forward Woody Newton of Mount Zion Prep in Baltimore has announced he intends to play for the Syracuse Orange.

Newton announced his decision Tuesday night on Twitter .

The 6-foot-8, 180-pound Newton, a native of Washington, D.C., is listed as the 79th prospect for the 2020 class by the recruiting website 247Sports. He also had offers from Arkansas, Cincinnati, Maryland, Penn State, Seton Hall, Virginia, West Virginia, and Xavier.

Newton is the first commitment in the 2020 recruiting cycle for Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, who has to retool the Orange for next season after the early departures of shooting guard Tyus Battle, forward Oshae Brissett, and center Paschal Chukwu.

Syracuse signed five players in the 2019 class.
