LOGAN, Utah (AP) — A Utah man who police say is the only suspect in the disappearance of his 5-year-old niece has been denied bail and will be kept behind bars as the search for the child continues. Logan Police Chief Gary Jensen said Tuesday that investigators have "strong evidence" including DNA linking 21-year-old Alex Whipple to the disappearance but he has not been charged in the crime. Whipple's attorney declined comment outside court.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Authorities say a fuel spill is suspected after a semitrailer carrying butane gas rolled into a reservoir in northern Utah. Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Nicholas Street said Tuesday there were no injuries in the Monday morning accident that occurred on a highway near Deer Creek Reservoir. Street says the driver was speeding and lost control of the vehicle. Authorities expect minimal environmental impact from the incident.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Authorities have rescued four women who got stuck in a narrow slot canyon while hiking in southern Utah. Officials said the experienced hikers went climbing in the Box Death Hollow slot canyon Sunday near Escalante, Utah. According to officials the group was unprepared for the deep water levels in the canyon and became hypothermic. Search and rescue teams freed them from the canyon early Monday after one of the women used a beacon alert to call authorities Sunday night. No one was injured.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The prison population in Utah is growing despite reform efforts in recent years aimed at curbing the number of inmates. The Salt Lake Tribune reported Tuesday the state averaged 6,781 prison inmates each day last month, about 300 more than it had a year earlier. According to Utah State Courts figures, prosecutors filed 14% fewer felony cases in 2016, but filings increased slightly in each following year.
