GRANTSVILLE — A Grantsville woman is accused of illegally giving a tattoo to a 14-year-old boy.
The 20-year-old woman was charged May 2 in Grantsville Justice Court with unlawful tattooing of a minor, a class B misdemeanor; and two counts of an adult selling tobacco to a minor, a class C misdemeanor.
On March 28, a 14-year-old boy and his sister went to the woman's home, according to a search warrant affidavit. While there, the woman offered to give the boy a tattoo for $40, the warrant states.
"(She) proceeded to tattoo an Egyptian design on the 14-year-old (boy's) chest. After she was finished, she drove the 18- and 14-year-olds to the Maverik gas station and purchased tobacco product for both parties," according to the warrant.
On April 23, police received a call from the boy's mother who was "very upset that her child was tattooed without her consent. Her major concern was that the needles may not have been sterile before use and she was unsure if they were tattooed in a sterile area inside of the home," the warrant states.
The 18-year-old sister told police that the woman had also given her a tattoo for $5.
"I contacted the Tooele County Health Department and gave (them the woman's) information. I asked if she currently had a license to practice body art and they said she did not," the officer wrote in his affidavit.
When police questioned the woman, she said she thought the 14-year-old boy was actually 17, the warrant states. The officer informed her that it was still illegal to tattoo a 17-year-old without a parent's consent.
Investigators seized nine tattoo guns, a "tattoo machine," two boxes of unused needles, 46 bottles of tattoo colors, and a disc "for tattoo training," a return to the search warrant states.
The woman's next scheduled court date is May 21.
