SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — South Salt Lake Mayor Cherie Wood is proposing a substantial property-tax hike to give police and firefighters a pay raise.
The Deseret News reports that Wood night proposed a 31% property tax hike to the City Council on Wednesday. The new tax would bring in about $1.6 million and cost the average homeowner an additional $71 per year on their property tax bill.
Wood says she wants to bring South Salt Lake police and firefighter pay in line with other agencies across the Wasatch Front.
Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski proposed a salary hike for police Tuesday night as the city struggles to retain police officers.
Council members will vote on the budget after a public hearing on June 5.
