LAYTON — A large, two vehicle accident closed several lanes on U.S. 89 in Davis County on Sunday afternoon, according to a statement on the Utah Department of Transportation's website.

A northbound vehicle drifted into the southbound lanes for an unknown reason near 100 North in Layton about 1 p.m., striking a southbound vehicle, according to Layton Fire Battalion Chief Jason Cook. A small fire ignited in an engine of one of the vehicles, and was quickly extinguished.

Four vehicle occupants, all adults, were transported to a local hospital for treatment, some with minor injuries and some with serious injuries, Cook said. None of these injuries appeared to be life-threatening, he added. It was not immediately clear who was in which car.

The entire road was closed in both directions for cleanup, UDOT officials said.

Northbound and southbound U.S. 89 were reopened late Sunday afternoon, Cook said.

Further information was not immediately available.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this article stated there are six lanes on U.S. 89 where this accident occurred. There appear to be four, plus a turning lane. This article has been updated to reflect that correction.
