EUREKA, Juab County — A Union Pacific train derailment of 23 cars caused the release an unknown quantity of propane after one car overturned about six to eight miles south of Eureka, prompting the response of multiple emergency crews.
The Utah Department of Environmental Quality was notified of the 9:25 a.m. incident Saturday and was monitoring the situation.
Dispatchers with the Juab County Sheriff's Office say a train derailed in a remote area about five miles north of the intersection of U.S. 6 and the old state highway 148 on Saturday.
The conductor and engineer were on the train at the time of the derailment but neither were injured.

Multiple agencies from neighboring Utah County, including the Pleasant Grove Fire Department, responded to the incident.
Juab County fire officials were collecting air samples, and the railroad sent its own hazardous materials response team to the site, according to the state report.
People were asked to avoid the area of the turnoff to the Little Sahara Recreation Area, according to Pleasant Grove firefighters.
Juab County sheriff's officials were not able Saturday to project a timeframe to clear the cars, but anticipate the efforts will take several days.
