LEVAN, Juab County — A semitruck rollover and gasoline spill forced the closure of state Route 28 between Gunnison and Levan Saturday morning, but by evening officials said the highway had been reopened.
About 5:30 a.m., a semitruck driver traveling south on S.R. 28 and pulling two trailers of gasoline lost control of the vehicle about 7 miles north of Yuba Lake, according to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Lawrence Hopper.
The driver “went off the road and then overcorrected and came back onto the road and overcorrected again,” causing the rear trailer to roll and block all lanes on the road, Hopper said.
The rollover also caused the rear trailer to spill gasoline onto the road. Levan and Nephi fire departments and their hazmat team, as well as the Sevier County hazmat team, responded to the scene to help with the clean up.
The road was closed for several hours in both directions, Hopper said. The semitruck was the only vehicle involved in the crash and the driver was not injured, he said.
I-80 crash
In a separate incident, a semitruck hauling produce attempted to turn onto westbound I-80 from the eastbound I-84 ramp and rolled. The driver made the turn too quickly, which caused the vehicle to roll, Hopper said.
The driver and a second driver that was in the sleeper were not injured.
The eastbound I-84 ramp onto westbound I-80 is temporarily closed as crews work to clean up and turn the semitruck upright.
