FRUITLAND — Troopers identified two people who died in an icy crash on U.S. Highway 40 Wednesday.

Esteban Rivas-Dimas, of Roosevelt, and Pascual Navarro, of Mexico, were driving eastbound on the highway several miles east of Strawberry Reservoir when Rivas-Dimas lost control of the car and it slid into the westbound lanes.

The driver's side of the car hit the front of a snow plow, and Rivas-Dimas and Navarro were both killed on impact. Two other passengers were transported to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Troopers believe snowy and icy road conditions were contributing factors in the crash. The car's rear tires were also "largely bald and in an unsafe condition," troopers said in a news release.
