OGDEN — The boys opened up the 6A state basketball tournament at the Dee Events Center in Ogden on Monday. The tournament will go through the week, with a champion being named Saturday.

Wednesday’s quarterfinals include Region 3 champion Copper Hills and American Fork at 2:30 p.m., Region 2 champion Kearns and Davis at 4:10 p.m., Region 1 top-seed Fremont and Riverton at 5:50 p.m., and Herriman against Region 4 champion Pleasant Grove in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m.

First round: Cavemen quartet overcome Layton, flat tire for quarterfinal bid

OGDEN — Only one thing could stop American Fork from getting through the first day in the Class 6A state basketball tournament. But a flat tire on the way to the Dee Events Center in Ogden wasn’t one of them — and neither was Layton. After arriving during the fourth quarter of the game that preceded them, the Cavemen got double-digit efforts from Tanner Cuff, Trey Stewart, Hayden Franson and Isaac Johnson and rolled past Layton, 80-68, Monday to advance to the quarterfinals of the 6A tournament. Franson had 19 points, six rebounds and four assists; Johnson added 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals; Cuff supplied 14 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals; and Stewart finished with 11 points, four rebounds and four assists for American Fork (21-3), which assisted on 16-of-26 made baskets. “Timing was good, and at the end of the day, we got more time on the clock,” American Fork coach Ryan Cuff said. “We wanted to get here early enough to let the guys watch at least a half because some of them haven’t played in this tournament. “But we had an experience like this when we went to Arizona, barely made it — and we ended p winning four games. So we just used this as a positive.” Ethan Potter had a game-high 20 points, six rebounds and four assists to lead the Lancers (11-1), who got 17 points from Collin Jeppson and 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals from Tanner Kofoed. The Cavemen stretched their lead to 33-24 on Johnson’s 3-pointer with 3:38 left in the half. Potter had 14 points in the first half to keep the game in check. But the Cavemen ended the second on a 9-2 spurt to take a 41-26 lead at the break. Cuff and Johnson both had 12 points and four rebounds at the break, and Utah Valley signee Trey Stewart supplied six points, including a late-breaking jumper that gave the Cavemen its 15-point halftime margin. The second half was all Cavemen. Stewart lobbed a dunk to Johnson, then found himself on the receiving end of jam on a backboard pass from Cuff on the next possession to push American Fork’s advantage up to 57-39 late in the third quarter, and the Cavemen cruised to the finish. “We wanted to run the floor as well as we could and get our guys going, get in a flow, and move the ball,” Cuff said. “We just wanted them to be able to get a feel for the floor and every chance we got, to push it. “We’ve got to execute it, but I’m proud of them. Layton is scrappy and I am glad we could get the first one out of the way.” The Cavemen will face Copper Hills in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. — Sean Walker, KSL.com

First round: With limited leading scorer, Copper Hills overwhelms Hillcrest, 58-44

OGDEN — About 10 minutes into Copper Hills’ state tournament opener Monday against Hillcrest, disaster struck. Senior standout Trevon Allfrey came up with a bum ankle. But don’t sound the alarm just yet. Perry Dettling had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Kyle Hoffman added 14 points and six boards, as the Grizzlies used a 10-4 second quarter to overwhelm the Huskies and pull away for a 58-44 win in the Class 6A state basketball tournament at Weber State University. Stone Hutchings added 13 points, four rebounds and two assists for the Grizzlies (17-6), who led by as much as 17 and limited the Huskies to 28.9 percent shooting. “We were just going to make sure we spread them out and take good shots,” Copper Hills coach Andrew Blanchard said. “That didn’t happen all the time; we missed a couple of bunnies. But for the most part, we did well in shot selection, being patient and taking the easy play.” Brox Ashby had 16 points and eight rebounds to lead the Huskies, and Tyan Brinar added eight points and five rebounds. The Grizzlies held Hillcrest (7-15) to four points on 2-of-12 shooting in the second quarter to pull away for a 29-15 halftime advantage. Perhaps the biggest surprise, though, was that Copper Hills was doing it with limited contributions from Allfrey. The senior who averages 20.3 points per game had just six points in nine minutes before the break, and did not play in the second half. “He’s a big piece of our team,” Blanchard said of Allfrey. “Trevon just tweaked his ankle, and we wanted to be very precautionary with him to make sure we didn’t make it any worse in the second half. We decided we’d go without him, and he’ll be ready to go Wednesday.” Zac Gallman’s putback basket with 55 seconds left cut Hillcrest’s deficit to eight, 52-44. First round: Light turns on as Kearns pulls away from West Jordan, 51-42

OGDEN — Kearns coach Dan Cosby still isn’t sure what makes the lights turn on for the Cougars’ basketball team. He knows it when he sees it, and in the first quarter of Monday’s Class 6A state tournament opener, the light wasn’t turning on. The Cougars found a way to stumble through the darkness, though, until it did. Majok Kuath had 15 points, and Kwo Agwa scored 12 of his 14 of his points in the second quarter, as the Cougars rallied to overcome West Jordan, 51-42, at Weber State University. “We probably should’ve started earlier. It’s do-or-die,” Kearns coach Dan Cosby said with honesty. “But the season’s almost over and I still haven’t figured out what turns on the light with these guys. And if the light doesn’t come on, the season is done. I’m baffled. The lights were on, we’re in the state tournament, and they’re playing like we’ve never been here before. Maybe the lights bothered them a little bit. But we’ve got to regroup and play better.” Cole Lake added 12 points, four rebounds and three steals for Kearns (19-5), including a fastbreak flush with an and-one in the waning moments for the final margin. Hunter Sanders led West Jordan with 13 points, and Jakob Josephson added 10 points and five assists for the Jaguars (8-16). Agwa scored 12 points to help Kearns turn a 12-3 first-quarter deficit into a 20-18 halftime advantage. The Cougars shot just 1-of-9 in the first quarter in trailing early, but overturned the deficit through the 6-foot-7 post. Agwa knocked five of the Cougars’ seven shots in the first half as Kearns out-scored the Jaguars 10-4 in the paint to take the lead. Kearns kept the lead through the second half, but could never pull away thanks to some timely shooting from West Jordan. Tyler King’s three pulled the Jags within one, 31-30 at the third-quarter break. Josephson capped a 4-0 spurt to cut West Jordan’s deficit to four, 42-38, with 1:50 remaining. But the Jaguars could get no closer. Kearns (19-5) advanced to face Davis in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. MT in Ogden. “Today, I’m a little disappointed,” Cosby said. “This is the team that has lost its (five) games. “We’ve got a tough one against Davis. First Round: 'Second option' Sampson lifts Davis to OT win over Westlake, 62-61

OGDEN — Tyson Garff scored 27 points for Davis’ boys basketball team in their first-round Class 6A state tournament game. So when the Darts trailed by one to Westlake in the final seconds and needed a bucket, he was obviously the first option. The only problem? He was double-covered. So Jake Sampson took over. Sampson scored 8 points, including the game-winner with eight seconds left, as Davis held on to edge Westlake, 62-61 in overtime Monday at Weber State. “Jake just made a play by driving the line,” Davis coach Chad Sims said. “He’s a good shooter, but he’s worked on his game to get that. He’s worked hard, and he’s good at it. Credit to him for making a play when we needed it.”

Brendon Redford had 16 points and six rebounds for Davis (17-7), which held the hot-shooting Thunder to 6-of-22 from 3-point range. Westlake’s Tredyn Christensen led all scorers with 24 points and seven rebounds, and Cooper Mattson added 16 points and three 3-pointers for the Thunder (16-7). But after trailing by as much as six in the second half, the Darts rallied to tie the game three times in regulation to force the extra period. Garff scored four during a 7-4 run in the extra session, including an off-balance layup with 40 seconds left to give the Darts a 60-59 lead. But Westlake regained the edge when Mattson was fouled on the next possession, leaving 22 seconds for Garff to respond. Or rather, Sampson, a 3-pointer shooter who drove to the rim in the final seconds to secure a spot for his team in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. “That will be in my memories forever. It was awesome,” Sampson said of the winning make. “If there was no time left, I would’ve celebrated with everyone. It felt so cool — but we got the stop, and got the win.” — Sean Walker, KSL.com

First Round: Riverton hits late free throws to hold on to 64-54 win over Cyprus

OGDEN — For the first time in eight years, Riverton can now say they’ve won a playoff game. The Riverton Silverwolves staved off defeat Monday to claim a 64-54 win over the Cyprus Pirates in the first round of the 6A state basketball tournament. After several lead changes and no team leading by more than 5 points in the first half, the Silverwolves opened up the second half on an 8-0 run to build up a 13-point lead — its largest margin of the game. But the Pirates weren’t about to give in and chipped away at the lead. With two minutes left in the game, Cyprus managed to get Riverton’s lead down to 4 points on a corner 3-pointer. But with the clock ticking, Cyprus was forced to foul Riverton to stop the clock and to hold onto any hope of the come-from-behind win. Riverton, though, hit their free throws down the stretch to build up a 10-point lead and to hold off Cyprus’ attack for the win. In all, the Silverwolves went 20-of-25 from the charity stripe, while shooting 48.8 percent from the field. Riverton’s Dayne McDonald finished the game with 17 points and three assists to lead the team in scoring, and Tristyn Hymus added 11 points and seven rebounds. The Pirates had three players in double figures in the loss and were led by Tayven Aloi, who finished with 18 points and five rebounds. Jordan Orozco added 14 points and eight rebounds and Jackson Muramoto added 10 points in the loss. Riverton will face Fremont, the No. 1 team out of Region 1, on Wednesday at 5:50 p.m. at the Dee Events Center in Ogden. — Josh Furlong, KSL.com

First Round: Fremont uses late rally to pull away from Lone Peak in 64-53 win

OGDEN — Looking to avoid an upset, Fremont used a fourth-quarter rally to defeat Lone Peak 64-53 in first round of the boys 6A state basketball tournament Monday. Fremont, the No. 1 team to come from Region 1, used a pair of 3-pointers and late-game free throws to eventually pull away from the Knights behind a 19-point fourth quarter. Lone Peak switched to a full-court press to combat Fremont, but the Silver Wolves were able to beat the press and passed the ball around to wear out the clock to claim the win. The Silver Wolves led by as much as 9 points in the first quarter — their largest of the half — before the Knights battled back and cut the lead to two at halftime. The two teams traded shooting percentages in the first half, with Fremont coming out in the first quarter shooting 54.5 percent from the field before dropping to 23.1 percent in the second quarter. Lone Peak started the game out slow, shooting 23.1 percent in the first quarter, before finishing the half shooting 54.5 percent from the field in the second quarter to make it a 2-point game. In the second half, the two teams, again, traded baskets and locked it up 45-all going into the final quarter. And that’s when Fremont came alive and outscored Lone Peak 19-8 for the win. Fremont’s Dallin Hall only had 4 points after the first half, but finished the game with 25 points and eight rebounds to lead his team in scoring. Calvin Peterson and Tige Voorhees both hit key 3-pointers to open up the fourth quarter and to start the Silver Wolves’ late run. The two finished with 10 points apiece in the win. The Knights had three players in double figures and were led by Cameron Brimhall’s 18 points and six rebounds. Hunter Hannemann added 15 points and Jaxon Pollard added 13 points and 14 rebounds in the loss. Fremont moves on to the quarterfinal round of the tournament and will play Riverton on Wednesday at 5:50 p.m. MST at the Dee Events Center in Ogden. — Josh Furlong, KSL.com

First Round: Pleasant Grove wins big in dismantling over Weber

OGDEN — Pleasant Grove wasted no time in showcasing its talent over visiting Weber Warriors Monday in the first round of the 6A boys basketball state tournament, beating the Warriors 80-57. Led by 7-footer Matt Van Komen’s 16 points and 10 rebounds, Pleasant Grove jumped out to a 18-11 lead at the end of the first quarter before eventually claiming a 23-point win. Van Komen, a University of Utah signee, had 14 points and six rebounds in the first half as the Warriors struggled to combat his 7-foot-4 frame. Pleasant Grove used Van Komen’s size to their advantage to play an inside-out game, with several shooters on the perimeter able to drain 3-pointer after 3-pointer for a total of six made first-half threes. In all, Pleasant Grove managed to shoot 64.3 percent from the field in the first half, including an incredible 66.7 percent from deep. Pleasant Grove would finish the game shooting 54.4 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from deep. “Sometimes we get hot and just get going,” Van Komen said. “It’s fun when that happens.” On the other end of the court, Weber shot only 31.4 percent from the floor and struggled to get any points from anyone other than Max Triplett in the first half, who finished the game with 14 points. Triplett had 14 of the team’s 20 points in the opening half. The Warriors were led in scoring by Hudson Schenck, who finished the game with 22 points — 19 of which came in the second half. Weber made a late-game push behind Schenck against a Pleasant Grove second unit that was subbed into the game with two minutes remaining in the third quarter. Against the second unit, Weber went on a 17-0 run before Pleasant Grove finally hit a 3-pointer and built back up its lead. The Warriors would cut the Vikings’ lead to 12 before Pleasant Grove built back its lead to come away with the first-round win. Pleasant Grove moves on to the quarterfinal round to play Herriman at 7:30 p.m. MST on Wednesday at the Dee Events Center in Ogden. — Josh Furlong, KSL.com

First Round: Herriman bigger, stronger in 77-58 win over Granger

OGDEN — It was all Herriman in the opening game of the 6A boys basketball state tournament Monday as the Mustangs claimed a 77-58 blowout win over the visiting Granger Lancers. The bigger and strong Herriman team opened up the first quarter with an 18-7 lead and never looked back in their dismantling of Granger. By the end, it was a 19-point victory for region three’s second-best team. After trailing by 26 points at the half, Granger came out of the break shooting the ball at a higher clip and attacked the rim for several quick 2-point buckets, but Herriman traded it for 3-pointers on the other end and continued to put distance on the Lancers. Herriman was simply the better team in all areas — 3-point shots, post play and fluid passing for open looks. Herriman was led in scoring by center Blake Freeland, who finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds, including 13 first-half points in an early show of dominance. Freeland was a load to handle in the post for Granger, particularly on his three monstrous dunks of the game that brought down the house and highlighted his unstoppable play. Granger’s Roulervee Vann did manage one highlight block against Freeland as he attempted one of his trademark dunks — a rare highlight for the Lancers that were simply beat in all facets of the game. The Lancers had several opportunities to cut into Herriman’s lead in the first half but failed to make a majority of their shots, finishing with a low 28.6 percent shooting from the field in the first half. In the end, Granger shot 38.7 percent from the field and couldn’t combat the physical play of Herriman for a first-round loss. For Herriman, it's the first time in seven years that they've made it out of the opening round. "We don't think we've come off and pulled out miracles, but with that said, they're pretty talented and they've worked hard," Herriman head coach Brad Tingey said. "But it's a big thing for us." Herriman now moves on to the quarterfinal round of the 6A tournament and will play region four's best team Pleasant Grove on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. MST at the Dee Events Center in Ogden. — Josh Furlong, KSL.com
