NEW YORK (AP) — Nike says it's investigating why Duke freshman Zion Williamson split a shoe open during a game against rival North Carolina last night. But the sportswear giant says it's an "isolated occurrence." The Beaverton, Oregon-based company says it's concerned and says quality and performance of its products are of "utmost importance." Nike quickly became the target of ridicule on social media.
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry says the club plans to have disaffected All-Star Anthony Davis in the starting lineup on Friday night in Indiana. However, Gentry would not discuss plans for Davis beyond the Pelicans' next game. So, it remains unclear if Davis will play Saturday night when LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers visit New Orleans. Davis, who is represented by the same agent as James, has requested a trade.
UNDATED (AP) — The Washington Capitals have acquired winger Carl Hagelin from the Los Angeles Kings for a 2019 third-round pick and a conditional sixth-round pick in the next year's entry draft. The teams announced the trade today after Washington winger Devante Smith-Pelly cleared waivers and was assigned to Hershey of the American Hockey League. That clears a roster spot and salary-cap space for Hagelin, a 30-year-old Swede who makes $4 million this season.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers will honor pitching great Don Newcombe by adding a commemorative No. 36 patch to their uniforms this season. He died Tuesday at 92. The team says Newcombe will be saluted in pregame ceremonies on April 27, when he is inducted into the Legends of Dodger Baseball. Newcombe, along with Jackie Robinson and Roy Campanella, helped pave the way for blacks to play in the major leagues.
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears have released tight end Dion Sims. Signed by Chicago in 2017 after spending his first four years with Miami, Sims caught 17 passes for 189 yards over 22 games the past two years. But he went from making 14 starts to playing in just eight games last season — Chicago's first under coach Matt Nagy. Sims suffered a concussion at Buffalo on Nov. 4 and was placed on injured reserve two weeks later.
