ST. GEORGE — A 20-year-old man who was critically injured after falling into a trench at a St. George construction site Monday died from his injuries later that day, officials said.

Britton Wilson died after tripping or falling into a trench at a construction site where he was working Monday, St. George Fire Department Chief Robert Stoker said. One of Wilson's co-workers tried to help him out of the trench with a ladder, but the side of the trench collapsed on Wilson before he could get out, Stoker said.

Authorities responded to the construction site at 3430 E. 2170 South about 4:30 p.m., and Wilson was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in critical condition. He died less than 24 hours later.

Wilson had been working at the site of a major city public works project, and crews were installing new water and sewer lines and widening the road, Stoker said. All appropriate safety measures were in place, including trench blocks, but the workers had moved the blocks out of the trench and were preparing to move them to another area.

Wilson was an employee of a local excavation company contracted with the City of St. George, Stoker said.
