SOUTH JORDAN — A 4-year-old boy died in a crash on South Jordan Parkway on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The crash took place just after 4 p.m. near 3700 W. South Jordan Parkway, South Jordan police Lt. Matt Pennington said. A Dodge Neon that was heading east failed to stop and caused a chain reaction of fender-benders involving three other cars, Pennington said.

There were three juveniles and an adult in the vehicle that didn't stop. The 4-year-old boy, later identified as D’mondre Brown, was riding in the front passenger seat and airbags deployed when the crash occurred, Pennington said.

Brown suffered significant injuries and was transported to a hospital in Riverton, where he later died, according to Pennington. The boy was wearing a seatbelt but was not in child restraints or a booster seat, Pennington added.

Passengers in the other cars involved in the crash had only minor injuries, Pennington said.

As of 5:15 p.m., one westbound lane of South Jordan Parkway between 4000 West and Bangerter Highway has been reopened, Pennington said. Eastbound lanes are still closed, he said.

Officials are asking people to use 9800 South or 11400 South as an alternate route for the next few hours.

Editor's note: Officials originally stated the boy's age as five years old. This article has been corrected to state the child's actual age.
