PROVO — A 48-year-old man died and a 13-year-old boy suffered minor injuries in a rollover crash on I-15 Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Emergency crews responded to a report of a rollover crash on the freeway near the Provo Center Street exit shortly before 12:15 p.m., Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Nick Street said.

Troopers said the man was driving a 2000 Toyota 4Runner and was traveling south in an HOV lane on I-15, when the SUV hydroplaned on slick roads and drifted to the left, striking a concrete barrier. The SUV then rolled "several times" before it came to a rest in the left emergency lane, UHP officials added.

The man, whose name wasn't immediately released, suffered injuries to his head and was transported to a hospital in critical condition, Street said. Street said the man died from his injuries at the hospital.

The 13-year-old boy was taken to Utah Valley Hospital with minor injuries. Both were wearing seat belts, troopers said.

The road was wet from heavy rain in the area at the time, troopers said. The crash remains under investigation, but officials said it appeared the SUV was traveling too fast for conditions.
