NORTH OGDEN — The North Ogden City Council is expected Tuesday to choose the city's next mayor to serve in place of fallen Utah National Guard Maj. and North Ogden Mayor Brent Taylor.

The City Council is scheduled to interview applicants and vote on a finalist Tuesday during a 6 p.m. meeting at the North Ogden City Office.

The meeting to choose a new mayor will be somber, said Annette Spendlove, the city's recorder and human resources director.

"It's something we never wanted," she said. "It's not a pleasant thing to have to do … He is certainly (missed)."

Taylor was killed Nov. 3 in an insider attack at a training base in Kabul, Afghanistan. He took an unprecedented one-year leave of absence from his post as mayor for the deployment to Afghanistan. Taylor left behind his widow, Jennie Taylor, and their seven children.

The City Council will choose among five candidates to serve as mayor through 2019, after which the mayor's seat will be up for re-election for the final two years of Taylor's term, which would have run through 2021.

Five hopefuls have submitted resumes to the City Council to consider:

  • Brent Chugg, who was appointed at Taylor's request to serve as mayor when Taylor was deployed in January.

  • Sean Casey, president of the audio equipment company Zu Audio, and a North Ogden resident who has been an opponent of construction of the city's new amphitheater.

  • Julie Anderson, substitute teacher and former North Ogden City Council candidate.

  • Steven Huntsman, a former North Ogden city councilman.

  • Janis Christensen, a member of the Weber Board of Education.
