A Salt Lake City man was seriously burned while repairing a tank in a downtown shop.
A fire marshal happened to be driving by about 2:15 this afternoon when she saw the flames and smoke and called the fire in.
The 2-alarm fire apparently started in one of the auto repair bays at Western Auto Radiator Co. at 567 S. 200 East, just a block south of the Main Library.
Owner Dan Wayman saw it start as he was leaving work. "I seen the flash, and I just ran for the extinguishers. And we got the fire off from Paul, got him outside."
"He was standing outside of the business," said Karleen Montanez, spokeswoman for the Salt Lake City Fire Department. "The first incoming fire engine was a fire rescue, so they were able to put him in the ambulance and take him to the hospital." Fire crews had no word on the status of that victim.
Wayman said he initially tried to put out the fire with extinguishers until it grew too big.
Smoke from the fire could be seen around downtown for a few minutes, but crews quickly knocked the blaze down.
No other buildings appeared to be affected, and it appeared that most of the damage at Western Auto was confined to the inside of the building.
The cause is still under investigation.
