WEST VALLEY CITY — Police arrested a man late Friday night after they say he crashed a stolen vehicle and then ran away from police.
Mario Fernandez, 37, was arrested for investigation of receiving a stolen vehicle and failing to stop for law enforcement officers, among other matters, according to a jail report.
About 11:26 p.m. Friday, West Valley police officers found a car that had been reported missing in the driveway of a home near 3250 S. 3600 West, according to West Valley City Police Sgt. John Pittman.
While officers were watching the vehicle, they saw someone, later identified as Fernandez, abruptly get in the car, put it in reverse and try to leave, Pittman said.
Officers tried to stop the car, but Fernandez backed up into a parked vehicle, Pittman said. He then got out and ran away on foot, Pittman added.
Shortly afterward, officers using K-9 units to track Fernandez found him hiding nearby. They took him into custody without any further incident, according to Pittman.
Fernandez was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail several hours later, according to a jail report.
Pittman said Fernandez also was wanted on warrants worth more than $100,000, though he did not know the nature of those warrants.
