WEST VALLEY CITY — West Valley police arrested a 19-year-old man over the weekend allegedly involved in two shooting incidents just hours apart.
Ty Coe, of South Jordan, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of six counts of felony discharge of a firearm, two counts of aggravated assault, obstruction of justice and criminal mischief.
On Monday, Coe was charged in 3rd District Court with six counts of illegal discharge of a firearm, a third-degree felony; and obstructing justice, a third-degree felony.
The series of alleged events began just before noon on Thursday. West Valley police received several calls from people reporting a man at the intersection of 5500 West and 3500 South "was firing a gun from inside the vehicle," according to a Salt Lake County Jail report.
Later, about 4:20 p.m., another man reported to police that someone "fired seven rounds from a handgun at his vehicle at 5450 W. 3500 South," the report states.
Prior to the shooting, the victim told police that Coe had pulled up next to him, "began flashing gang signs," and then followed him, the report states. The driver pulled into a neighborhood in an attempt to get away.
"After (the driver) turned around in the neighborhood and pulled back up to 3500 South, he saw the Chevy Impala stopped in the roadway. (He) stated the driver opened the passenger door and fired seven rounds from a handgun at his vehicle. (The victim's) vehicle was struck three times, twice in the hood of the vehicle and once in the windshield," according to the report.
West Valley and Unified police, with assistance from Unified's helicopter, spotted Coe's vehicle later that night and followed it before making a felony stop near 5600 West and 3500 South using spike strips where Coe was arrested, the jail report states.
"Inside the vehicle, several expended casings could be seen in plain view. While the vehicle was driving through the neighborhood, the helicopter witnessed the driver of the vehicle discard an item out of the window. Officers went to the area where the this was witnessed and found a Glock 26 9MM handgun and a magazine," according to the report.
