NORTH SALT LAKE — Southbound I-15 reopened about 10:30 a.m. Thursday, an hour and a half after a car swerved into the carpool lane and caused a six-vehicle crash that closed the freeway near Beck Street in North Salt Lake, officials said.
The car was traveling south on I-15 when traffic slowed in the area and the driver realized they could not stop in time, according to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Nick Street. The driver swerved into the left lane, sideswiping another car, and setting off a chain reaction that resulted in a six-vehicle accident. The car that swerved ultimately ended up underneath a diesel tanker.
There were no major injuries, but some people were transported to hospitals, Street said.
The crash significantly slowed traffic, though cars were able to get by on the right shoulder, according to the KSL Traffic Center. The road reopened about an hour and a half later.
Commuters driving in the area will still experience a lot of congestion and may want to find alternate routes, the KSL Traffic Center said.
