SOUTH SALT LAKE — The past week has probably been one of the toughest weeks in the history of the South Salt Lake Police Department.

Officer David Romrell was killed in the line of duty last Saturday after being hit by a car driven by a suspected robber.

Romrell, 31, who also served tours overseas with the U.S. Marines, leaves behind a wife and infant son.

Saturday night, some of his colleagues and friends who knew him best spoke to KSL reporter Alex Cabrero to share some stories about how they’re remembering him.

Lt. Jim Anderson, South Salt Lake Police Department

“You hate to lose anybody in the law enforcement body, but when it’s from your own family and your own department, and also someone like him, so humble and willing to give —everybody respected him. He was a great guy.”

Sgt. Skylar Beebe, U.S. Marine Corp.

“We served in the reserves together out here, and shortly after he exited the unit, so did I. And just right after that, I found out I was going to go through a divorce. And he would always call me and make sure I was doing okay. He would always — he would always make sure to invite me to come over and try and get me out of the house and try and get me to kind of get my mind off of things.”

Officer Alex Plascencia, South Salt Lake Police Department

“I helped him paint the interior of his house when his little baby boy was born and ... looking back at it, I just, you know, I’m just, I’m glad I was able to be a part of it.”

Sgt. Ryan Cram, South Salt Lake Police Department

“I can promise you, around here, and with the officers he worked with, his memory will live on and we’ll always remember him and try to pay tribute to him and try to serve in a way that will honor him and do justice to, I guess, the person and is and was.”

Officer Romrell’s funeral is planned for Wednesday, Dec.5th, at 11 a.m. It will be carried live on KSL.
