MAGNA — Police identified a Riverton man on Tuesday who died in a fiery crash Monday morning.

Weston Gillen, 26, died from injuries after the car he was driving slammed into a large metal pole that holds a traffic light near 4100 South and 8400 West (Highway 111) about 10 a.m., Unified Police Sgt. Melody Gray said. The car then burst into flames.

Gillen was the only occupant inside the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Gray said because of the fire, officials were initially unable to identify whether the person who died was male or female.

A witness told police that the vehicle was traveling east on 4100 South when it made a U-turn to go west and struck the pole, Gray said. Due to the damage from the crash and the witness statement, Gray said they believe the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed.

The crash remains under investigation. Both directions of Highway 111 were closed for multiple hours Monday while officials investigated the crash.
