SALT LAKE CITY — With the quarterfinals round of the high school state playoffs getting underway this weekend, here are some of the most highly-anticipated games.
6A
Lone Peak vs. Davis (Nov. 2, 4 p.m.)
Both Davis and Lone Peak sit at 7-3 on the year. Davis has excelled on the road by winning five out of six games away from home. On the flip side, Lone Peak has been perfect at home, winning all five of their home games. The Knights are also entering Friday’s game on a four-game win streak. Davis will have their hands full trying to keep up with Lone Peak as Davis only scores an average of 17.9 points per game, whereas Lone Peak scores 29.1 points per game. Can Davis keep up with Lone Peak’s scoring and give the Knights its first home loss?
Weber vs. American Fork (Nov. 2, 4 p.m.)
The Cavemen of American Fork are 9-2 this year and one of those wins came in dominating fashion over the Weber Warriors in Week 1. The Warriors began the year 0-2 but have since shot out of a cannon to a 7-1 record to finish the season. The Warriors will be out for revenge for the embarrassing season-opening loss as they ride a five-game winning streak. Can American Fork crush Weber’s hopes once again?
5A
Roy vs. Timpview (Nov. 2, 4 p.m.)
The Roy Royals sit at 8-2 while the challenging Timpview Thunderbirds are 7-3. Roy has a high-powered offense, scoring 33.3 points per games. Timpview is not too bad themselves, putting up 30.9 points per game. Expect this to be a high-scoring game. The Royals' scoring defense has been 8 points better per game than the Thunderbirds, allowing only 16 instead of the Thunderbirds' 24. Will Timpview be able to slow down the Royals enough to pick up the win?
Corner Canyon vs. Viewmont (Nov. 2, 4 p.m.)
The Corner Canyon Chargers are heavy favorites in their home game against the visiting Viewmont Vikings. Corner Canyon is undefeated this year and average 49.6 points per game, while only allowing 12.1 points per game on defense; that's nearly a 40-point average win margin. The Chargers have been absolutely dominant this year and don't look like they'l slow down anytime soon. Viewmont does come into the game on a four-game winning streak, and underdogs have won plenty of games throughout sports history, but this will be a tough task for the Vikings. Will the underdog mentality be enough for the Vikings to topple the undefeated Chargers?
4A
Stansbury vs. Pine View (Nov. 2, 4 p.m.)
The 7-3 Pine View Panthers will be heading to Tooele to take on the 7-3 Stansbury Stallions. Last weekend, Pine View went on the road and upset a 9-1 Logan team. They'll look to do the same in what appears to be a more even matchup with the Stallions. Stansbury has been good home team, posting a 5-1 record. The most impressive thing about the Panthers is their offense. They average an explosive 48.7 points per game and only allow an average of 21.6 points per game. If the Stallions can keep the Panthers to just 21 points, they would have a good shot at winning the game, but will they be able to shoot down a high-flying offense?
The winners of these games will advance to the semifinal round of the playoffs, which will take place at Rice-Eccles Stadium the following week.
