HERRIMAN — A contractor digging for fiber lines struck a water main Thursday morning causing a water outage for some residents for several hours, city officials said.

The crew was working near 13400 South and Rosecrest Road when they struck the water main just before 11 a.m., said Herriman City public information officer Tami Moody.

Moody said the broken line supplied water for fire hydrants in the area.

The break caused water to spew out several feet like a geyser outside of the Smith’s grocery store located at 5560 W. 13400 South. It flooded the grocery store parking lot and even seeped in a nearby home.

Water service in that area of the city was shut off while crews repair the damage to the water main. City officials said it was fully restored about 7 p.m.

There was no cost estimate to the damage to the home. The amount of water caused a basement window to break and water poured into the basement. Moody said the city helped pump out water of the home.

"There was a lot of water running down through those roads. We're very lucky that only one home seemed to have some interior damage," she said.

Crews also worked for several hours to check to see if any other damage was done to the infrastructure in the area.
