UPDATE: A woman who was critically injured in the crash has now stabilized and is expected to recover, Utah Highway Patrol officials said Wednesday. - - - - - -

FARR WEST, Weber County — At least seven people were injured, two critically, after a nine-vehicle pileup on I-15 Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The crash involved eight passenger vehicles and a flatbed semitruck just south of Exit 349 in Farr West about 4 p.m., according to Weber Fire District officials.

The crash occurred when traffic began to slow and stop in one of the northbound I-15 lanes, Utah Highway Patrol officials said. A vehicle then swerved into another lane and was struck by the semitruck, which then struck other cars that had been stopped in traffic.

UHP officials said the driver of the first vehicle struck was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected. The driver was then struck by another vehicle during the chain-reaction crash.

That driver and another driver were transported to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden in critical condition, according to UHP Sgt. Nick Street. Weber Fire District officials said five other people were transported; Street said the others who had been transported suffered minor injuries.

Two northbound I-15 lanes were closed for several hours while crews cleaned up the crash. All lanes reopened Tuesday night.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
