PROVO — After a lawsuit, a change in management and a goal to reopen this summer, Provo residents never got a chance to go to the city’s “urban beach.”

With Labor Day now come and gone, summer is all but over, and Blue Island Resort, previously known as Seven Peaks Resort, didn’t reopen after all.

An official from a marketing firm hired to represent the company said in May that the park was scheduled to reopen in July after initially planning to reopen June 15. But that never happened.

Blue Island Resort officials didn’t respond to calls by KSL about its future, but the company did respond to a question on Facebook acknowledging that the water park would not reopen in 2018.

“So sorry, not opening this year. But next year will be an entirely upgraded experience,” the company wrote in the comment in August.

The future of the waterpark had been in limbo because of financial woes dating back to 2017.

A lawsuit filed by Courtside Condominiums LC and Parkprovo LLC in 4th District Court in June 2017 named Seven Peaks Water Park Provo as one of two defendants. The suit claimed the park was served a three-day notice to pay rent or vacate because they owed Courtside Condominiums about $293,000 for the six-month period of Jan. 15 through June 14, 2017.

Documents showed that the park owners weren’t optimistic that they’d be able to open by May 2018, when the park traditionally reopens. Parkprovo LLC, the park’s owner, filed for Chapter 11 protection on April 23, according to court documents.

Blue Island Group, LLC will manage operations at the park for the next two seasons, through 2019, and also has plans for a buyout of the park, John Anderson, CEO of Stardocs Media, a marketing firm the company hired, said in May.

It is unclear if that timeline changed after the park didn’t reopen in 2018.
